This book was quickly published just weeks after the US withdrawal to help raise awareness and advocate for the Afghan people.

Missional Care Resources

Alliance 436 was founded in response to a lack of care and self care in the missional community. Jesus told his disciples that they would be known for their love of another (John 13:35) but so often, love for the lost seems to eclipse love for other believers. Jesus took time away from the crowds (the ministry to the lost) to be with the Father, to be with his inner circle of three disciples, to be with the 12, and to be with a larger group of disciples (we hear of 72 and later 500). For various reasons, many missional workers felt a sense of guilt or hesitation to seek retreat. We’re here to help advocate for workers and help them find resources and rest. We also want to encourage workers to care for one another and even to be more generous to their co-laborers than those they have a calling to reach.

To the best of our knowledge, all of the resources we share are services to ministry laborers without financial obligation. Lack of funds should never be a reason to avoid reaching out. However, we do encourage everyone who has been blessed by one of these ministries to consider giving back in some way, even that simply means being an advocate through prayer with the Father and word-of-mouth commendations within the church and missional community. For any of the services offered by Alliance 436, please utilize the contact us page to make an initial request and our team will follow up with next steps.

ESL and Linguistic Resources

Our team has been actively involved in a variety of English classes, both internationally and within the United States. Through partnerships with other organizations as well as launching independent initiatives, we have gained valuable insight into a wide range of ESL curricula.

Based on our experience, we have compiled a list of recommended ESL curricula ideal for those starting new English language programs. In addition to structured materials, we strongly encourage incorporating classroom volunteers to support student engagement—especially for learners who may be shy or hesitant to participate. These one-on-one or small group interactions are essential for building confidence and reinforcing what is taught.

To create a well-rounded learning environment, we also recommend including conversation practice and storytelling in every lesson. While textbooks are helpful tools for developing reading and writing skills, true language acquisition comes through consistent, immersive experiences that prioritize communication.

Some of these resources are available for free and others require a paid subscription or upfront cost. Alliance 436 has no formal relationship nor represents any of the resources or organizations listed below and we do not benefit financially from any purchases made.

Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is a well-structured and self-paced ESL curriculum that builds progressively on language skills. We recommend it for students who have already mastered the alphabet and are comfortable with beginner-level reading.

When technology is available, Rosetta Stone serves as an excellent digital resource. To enhance its effectiveness, we encourage pairing each student with a volunteer who can provide support, especially during speaking exercises, and offer encouragement as students progress through the lessons.

Because Rosetta Stone primarily focuses on structured learning, we also recommend supplementing it with regular conversation practice or storytelling. These interactive elements are essential for developing fluency and building confidence in spoken English.

abc English Phonics

abc English Phonics is an ideal curriculum for students who are just beginning their English language journey, particularly those with no prior exposure to the alphabet. The program begins with letter recognition and progresses into foundational phonics, with an emphasis on vowel sounds.

This curriculum is especially effective for students who are illiterate in English and need strong support in mastering the basics. With multiple levels available, it provides flexibility for learners who require additional reinforcement and repetition. For educators working with beginners, abc English Phonics is a foundational resource we highly recommend.

Ventures

entures is a widely respected ESL curriculum, well-suited for students who have a foundational understanding of the alphabet and are ready to expand their vocabulary and practical language skills. We recommend using both the student book and accompanying workbook to reinforce lessons and develop writing proficiency.

This curriculum is one of the most commonly used among refugee resettlement programs due to its practical focus. It introduces essential vocabulary and everyday phrases that equip learners to navigate life in the United States with greater confidence and independence. For programs supporting newcomers, Ventures offers a comprehensive and culturally relevant path to language acquisition.

Sam and Pat

Sam and Pat is a highly effective, reading-focused ESL curriculum designed to support students at various literacy levels—from non-readers to more advanced learners. It provides a structured approach that builds progressively, strengthening both reading and writing skills over time.

This curriculum is especially useful as a supplement for students who need additional support in literacy development. Its step-by-step format makes it an excellent resource for helping learners gain confidence and competence in reading and writing English.

Longman ESL Literacy

Longman ESL Literacy is one of the most comprehensive and practical workbooks we have used in ESL instruction. It offers a wide range of accessible worksheets that cover foundational skills from learning the alphabet to writing personal information such as first and last names and home addresses.

This resource is especially valuable for newcomers to the United States, providing essential vocabulary and everyday phrases needed to begin building functional English communication skills. Whether used as a primary resource or a supplemental tool, Longman ESL Literacy equips learners with the practical language they need to navigate daily life with greater confidence.
